IN CHARACTER
Name: Forsythe Pendleton "Jughead" Jones III
Canon: Riverdale
Canon Point: After Chapter Twenty-Two: Silent Night, Deadly Night
Age: 16.
History: Jughead Jones
Personality:
Jughead would have the world believe he is an aloof, detached cynic with no faith in the world or humanity. Unfortunately for Jughead, this is largely untrue. His dark sense of humor rears its head any time Jughead is forced to deal with reality, whether it is making light of accusations by a classmate that he might have killed another classmate and 'done' things with his body (It's called Necrophilia, Reggie, can you spell it?) or bitterly remarking on the state of his life and the town as a whole. His humor is often mixed with a cynical outlook on life, a sense of apathy, and intermixed with film and literary references.
But despite his apparent apathy to most of life, Jughead is not the closed off room he lets others believe him to be. His temper is short and while he is reluctant to show it, it breaks from him in moments of raw emotion. When he's caught off guard by Betty attempting to throw him a surprise party, or when he punches Chuck in the face when he's confronted by too many new truths and opened secrets about Betty's actions. He lashes out and acts or reacts before he can consider the consequences.
He's clever and crafty, and quick to come up with plans and solutions to the problems that come up or the mysteries he and Betty try to solve. Not all of these plans work, and some of them are too impulsive or short-sighted, but Jughead sees them through to the end and works hard to straighten them out when they go wrong.
When he ends up trapped in his dad's lawyer's blackmail scheme, his dad shoulders the burden despite being on probation. Jughead, refusing to let his father and his new family with the Serpents become the snake charmer's drug runners, takes it on himself to rally the serpents and chases her out of town with threats on what would happen if she ever came back.
He's apathetic about most things, but he's very passionate about writing, films, and his family. A family that includes his father's gang, the Southside Serpents, when he eventually joins them. His loyalty to his friends and family is fierce. He would do anything to protect them, even when it means theoretically selling his soul to the devil and running drugs for a manipulative woman and former serpent.
His father has repeatedly disappointed him, falling in with the wrong crowds, drinking, and living an unemployed and illicit life that cost Jughead his family since Archie's dad fired him. In spite of this, Jughead believes in his father and consistently gives him chances and opportunities to clean up his act. He fully believes his father deserves that chance, and that one day his family can be whole again.
When Jughead sees a goal or an end to something, he sets himself to it and follows through with determination that is not easily shaken or redirected, willing to overcome any obstacle put before him as long as his friends and family are not hurt in the process. When his father is sent to jail, Jughead sets out to become the serpents' new peacekeeper. Even though he joined the gang, he did so only after making a promise to himself that he would make changes within the gang for the better, and help resolve the growing war between the North and Southsides.
He's a tough kid who has had a tough life fighting to survive and fighting the world's opinions of him. He can handle the physical and emotional abuse, and that strength is what allows him to survive the town's opinions of him, and the brutal beatdown trial he has to endure to become a serpent.
Abilities/Skills:
Writing: Jughead is a talented writer and editor. He works for his school paper as a writer/editor and is working on a novel about Riverdale. He's also passionate and knowledgeable about films.
Mechanical: Jughead knows a little about motorcycle care and repair. He's not as skilled a mechanic as Betty, but he can get the job done.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths
- Resourceful: Jughead has been self sufficient and finding ways to live on his own for years, going as far as to live under the stairs at his school for a while after losing his place in the drive-in, to avoid having to live at home.
- Problem Solver: He and Betty work together a lot, trying to get to the bottom of stories for the paper and sometimes solve crimes in the process.
- Forgiving: Jughead would rather forgive than hold a grudge. He forgives his father again and again, always hoping for the best. He believes strongly in second chances.
- Loyal: Despite being cynical and a self-proclaimed conscientious objector, Jughead is loyal to his friends and his family. He fights to protect them and keep them safe.
Weaknesses
- Too Trusting: For all his cynical views on the world, Jughead has too much faith in people and is too quick to trust them and it gets him in trouble on numerous occasions.
- Impulsive: Jughead makes snap decisions and acts with his emotions and heart more often than his head in the heat of the moment.
- Aloof: As a bit of an outcast, Jughead tends to keep things to himself and shut out the people who would call him friend.
- Cynical: He has a grim outlook on life and the world, despite his inner faith in people.
